CS2 timeline

Every CS2 patch worth knowing.

From the September 2023 launch through 2025. Volumetric smokes, MR12, sub-tick servers, Dust 2 + Train returns, Major results, weapon balance passes. The shape of how CS2 actually evolved.

2025

  1. Cosmetics

    Quarterly cosmetic drop with new graffiti tags and a community-creator sticker capsule. No gameplay changes.

  2. Weapons

    Re-tuned the M4 pair so the choice is more situational: M4A4 better at long range, M4A1-S better in close-quarters silenced engagements. M4A1-S magazine increased from 20 to 25.

2024

  1. After being removed in 2020, Train returned to CS2 with re-tuned sightlines and a slightly CT-favoured balance. Replaced one of the legacy maps in the active rotation.

  2. Competitive

    Second CS2 Major. Spirit won (donk MVP at 17 years old, set the youngest-ever Major MVP record). Confirmed Spirit + NaVi as the era's top contenders.

  3. Balance changes to the SMG class — MP7 first-bullet accuracy increased, UMP-45 damage falloff softened. Made these viable as eco-round upgrades from MP9/MAC-10.

  4. Cosmetics

    Released a new weapon case with rare-tier knife variants. Patched several StatTrak counters that were resetting on Steam item transfer.

  5. Maps

    Subtle banana geometry changes — slightly tighter logs and adjusted sandbag heights — that affected several pro-meta lineups. Banana wood-side cover restructured.

  6. After 7 months absent, Dust 2 returned in CS2's Source 2 graphics with re-tuned A-long sightline and the long doors made slightly tighter. Replaced one of the launch maps in the rotation.

  7. The first CS2 Major was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, March 2024. NaVi (with iM, w0nderful, b1t, jL, Aleksib) won 2-0 vs FaZe. Set the new "winning a CS2 Major" benchmark.

  8. IEM Katowice 2024 was the first S-tier CS2 event after Paris 2023 (the last CS:GO Major). Spirit won, 2-0 vs FaZe in the final.

2023

  1. Holiday capsule release. Cleaned up some legacy CS:GO sticker references. Steam Marketplace integration smoothed out for CS2 items.

  2. Valve's first major post-launch patch addressed frame-time spikes, sound regressions on Nuke, and a bug where AWP scope sensitivity was inconsistent.

  3. Launch active duty: Mirage, Inferno, Nuke, Anubis, Ancient, Vertigo, Overpass. Dust 2 returned later in 2024. Train and Cobblestone absent.

    Sub-tick servers
    Mechanics

    CS2 servers now timestamp every input and process them at exactly the moment they happened, not just on the next tick. Same feel regardless of tick rate.

  5. Mechanics

    Smokes are now 3D volumes that react to bullets, HE grenades, and molotovs. A bullet carves a peek-hole; an HE briefly clears the smoke; a molly pushes it up. Fundamentally changes utility play.

  6. Competitive

    CS2 launched with first-to-13 (max 24 rounds), down from CS:GO's first-to-16. Half-time at 6 rounds. Tighter games, stronger pistol-round impact, more map veto leverage in pro play.

    CS2 replaces CS:GO
    Launch

    Counter-Strike 2 launches as a free auto-update for all CS:GO owners. Source 2 engine, volumetric smokes, sub-tick servers, and re-built active-duty maps. CS:GO retired immediately.
