CS2 stacks four timers on top of each other: freeze + buy (15s), round (1:55), bomb (40s), defuse (5s with kit / 10s without). Hit play, plant, defuse — see how they nest and what “1:00 left” actually means.

The four nested timers

  • Freeze + buy phase

    15 seconds

    The wait before the round goes live. You can buy, drop, throw nades. CTs can\'t cross spawn.

  • Round timer

    1:55 (115 seconds)

    Standard competitive round time after freeze ends. If no plant happens by 0:00, CTs win.

  • Bomb timer

    40 seconds

    After plant. The bomb detonates if not defused — round-time becomes irrelevant once planted.

  • Defuse

    10s without kit · 5s with kit

    Holding E (or +use) on the bomb. Defuse kit costs $400 — required for any retake situation.

Key insight: the round timer doesn’t stop when the bomb is planted — it just becomes irrelevant. The bomb timer (40s) is what matters post-plant. Most defenders don’t realise: from full round time with 1:00 left, they have 1:40 total clock to retake (1:00 round + 40s bomb).
